PRAYER CONCERNS

AUGUST 29, 2010

 

MUSIC MINISTRIES - The Henning Memorial UMC Chancel Choirs have begun meeting again on Sunday mornings at 7:40 AM and 10:10 AM.  The Bell Choir has also begun rehearsals again on Wednesdays at 6 PM.  If you are interested in joining one of our ministries, we look forward to seeing you there!

 

FLOWERS ON THE ALTAR today are given to the glory of God in honor of Dahse Rhea Vincent’s baptism.

We have been praying for the vision and direction of our church during our time of transition.  We invite you to join us in praying immediately after the 8:00 am service AND on Mondays at 12:30 pm in the Sanctuary.  Also, please include the church in your daily prayers.

 

NEW LIFE SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASS - The New Life Sunday School Class began a new study, John Ortberg’s “If You Want to Walk on Water, You’ve Got To Get Out of the Boat” on Sunday, August 22nd.  Everyone is invited to join us in Room 201 (upstairs) at 9:15 am.

FALL BROCHURE - We have prepared a special fall brochure which includes the Bible studies beginning September 1st, plus other events for Fall 2010.  It has a lot of great information and we hope you find it useful.  Extra copies are available at the front desk in the reception area.

 

USHERS NEEDED:  Today we are passing a clipboard with a sign-up sheet so that youth, men and women can sign up to be an usher at one of the morning services.  You are asked to attend one of the usher trainings, September 12th or September 19th in Key Hall during the Sunday School hour.  Training is a requirement for those who wish to usher.  We look forward to seeing you at training.

 

EVENING SERVICE will be led by Vickie Huckeba.  Scripture is Hebrews 13:1-8, 15-16.

 

NURSERY - If you need child care / nursery for any meeting at HMUMC this month, please contact Peggy in the church office at 527-5483.

 

BIBLE STUDY - Do you desire a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ?  Do you want an overview of the Bible?  Do you have 34 weeks to devote to your growth?  If you answered yes to all 3 questions contact Rev. Heather to sign up for Disciple Bible Study 527-5483.  It will not be held on Wednesday nights.

 

UMYF - Open Gym begins Wednesday after school.  After Open Gym, we will have dinner in Key Hall, followed by small groups in the Family Life Center.

 

Wonderful Wednesday Night Bible Study Class (WWNBSC) will resume meeting September 1st at 6:00 pm in the Conference Room.  We will be focusing on short studies starting with Max Lucado’s book ~ “Facing Your Giants.”  You know your “Goliath.”  You recognize his walk, the thunder of his voice.  He taunts you with bills you can’t pay, people you can’t please, habits you can’t break, failures you can’t forget, and a future you can’t face.  Just like David, YOU CAN FACE YOUR GIANTS!  Come and join us for this exciting study.  Please call the Church Office (527-5483) or Sherry Mansell (625-7801) to register.

 

WESLEYAN WEDNESDAY - Learning Opportunity starts September 1st at 6pm - Risking Welcome study facilitated by Rev. Heather. It will run 6 weeks of "come and see" and then will have 2 weeks of "go and do."  We will use Scripture, videos, and a study & reflection guide to experience, discuss, and meditate on the Christian model of hospitality.  For more information contact Rev. UMYF - Youth Ignite permission slips are due NEXT Sunday, September 4th.

 

SPECIAL PRAYERS - Mission and Outreach would like you to say special prayers for Jerri and Bill Savuto, missionaries in Igembe, Kenya at Maua Methodist Hospital.  Henning Memorial United Methodist Church, with the efforts of the Outreach Committee has developed a covenant relationship with them.  Immediate prayers of concern are rising costs, shortage of nurses and hospital staff, and critical daily needs of so many people.

 

PAINT AND TWIST - You are invited to join other church members at Painting with a Twist on Saturday, September 18th.  We will be painting a red cross with scrolls.  We will paint from 7:00-9:00pm, but can gather as early as 6:30pm.  The cost is $35.  We can have up to 44 people attend.  Please email Sara White at saragail1229@yahoo.com or call her at 558-5130 by September 3rd, if you would like to attend.

 

BOOK CLUB - September's book club selection is Sweet By and By by Todd Johnson.  We will meet on Thursday, Sept. 9 at 6pm at Cindy Qualls' home.  Our October selection will be Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen.  For this selection we will meet on Thursday, Oct. 14 at 6pm; the location for this meeting will be announced later.  Please email Sara White at saragail1229@yahoo.com or call her at 558-5130, if you plan to attend either date.

 

Free Life Skills Classes at Care Help of Sulphur - September 10th How to Budget / October 8th Resume Writing / November 12th Skills Assessment / December 10th How to Budget - Care Help of Sulphur offers free Life Skill Classes taught by well known job educator, Carol Pettyjohn.  Classes are free and open to all regardless of income.  The purpose of these classes are to prepare job seekers by finding out what skills they already have, important job interviewing tips, how to create a resume, and how to budget their money.  Location:  200 N. Huntington Street. (Enter double doors on south side of building).  Time: 9:00 am - 10:00 am.  Seating is limited, so please call to reserve a seat 528-2273.

 

MCNEESE WESLEY FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES their 2nd Annual Fundraiser Golf Tournament Monday, September 27th.  Sponsors needed…Golfers needed...Begins at 11am.  Applications due September 22nd.  Applications are available at the church office.  For more information please call Bill Stanton 337-477-0422 or 337-540-3692.

 

CHILDREN’S HOME BENEFIT RIDE - Saturday, October 9th, 2010.  Caravan on motorcycles, in trucks, cars, and church vans from Asbury UMC in Lafayette to the new children’s home in Sulphur.  Registration fee is $20.00 per driver, $10.00 per passenger.  Includes lunch, live band and tour of home.  Ride benefits Methodist Children’s Home for Southwest Louisiana in Sulphur.  For more information, contact Doug Hall at (985) 860-5247 or Libby Ricky with Asbury United Methodist Church at (337) 456-6116.  Registration forms are available in the church office.

 

METHODIST CHILDREN’S HOME OF SOUTHWEST LOUISIANA

 

A Grand Opening and Dedicatory Service will be held on October 17th.

The Open House will be 2:00-4:00 pm, with the Dedication to commence at 2:30 pm.

Bishop William Hutchinson will be present,

and the local churches and general community are invited to be in attendance.

 

UMYF - Kroger Neighbor to Neighbor program is here again.  This is a youth fundraiser and all you have to do to help the youth is shop at Kroger.  Be sure and pick up one of the blue Kroger Neighbor to Neighbor cards from any youth member or the church office.  Then the next time you shop at Kroger scan your Kroger Plus card then the blue Neighbor to Neighbor card.  Then throw away the blue card.  Every time you shop at Kroger with your Kroger Plus card a percentage of what you spend will go towards the youth group.  Last year you helped us to raise $1,363.25.

Care Help of Sulphur is in need of volunteers to help process donated items for the Wise Penny Thrift Store.  If you can donate a few hours once a week or once a month, we can use your assistance in this valuable community ministry.  We welcome individuals or groups to work morning or afternoon shifts on weekdays.  Special work days on the weekend can be arranged for groups as well.  With proceeds from store sales, we offer assistance with rent, utilities, food, furniture, and clothing to Sulphur/Carlyss residents in need.  Care Help’s mission is to express the love of God through ministry to those in need, by supplying short-term assistance and promoting life skills.  Please contact Sandy Friesner, Volunteer Coordinator, 528-2273, vccarehelp@xspedius.net or stop by the Wise Penny Thrift Store at 200 North Huntington Street.
